Russell gives Thomas Edison a formal painted presence, concentrating attention on the figure within the frame. Elsewhere in the collection, Edison appears again as a sculptural bust. Seen together, the works offer two ways of approaching a likeness: one carried by color across a surface, the other by form in space.
