Marine-life and shell studies for The Sea Children

Shells and marine forms gather on the sheet like a small world brought up from the sea. At lower right, a scallop opens into its distinctive fan. That drawing also appears in Russell's The Sea Children of 1901, carrying one of these closely observed forms from the working sheet into a reader's hands.
